I have created a wiki in my ICT lesson so I have some knowledge about it, nevertheless, I read an article about it.

What is a wiki?

We can say that wiki is a web page that can be shared and edited by more people (if they are allowed to). It provides a collaborative and open-ended group work that can be used for different means-as a tool for learning, for co-operation, etc.

First wikis appeared in the mid-1990s and they are used in varieties of co-operative activities. For example higher education uses it as a kind of archive for notes. But it can be used by common users as well.

Everybody can create his own wiki-all you need is the Internet and some Web browser. Then it is quite easy. You can edit your pages there, load pictures, videos, files, etc. 

The site can be edited from different places if you have an access. So you can participate on it anytime you want. 

There are some disadvantages of wikis as well. One of them is maybe the number of editors that can edit one wiki, modify it and manipulate with things. So there is a risk that someone else can delete your page or work by accident.

I like wikis because it allows users to form project, pages, and divide it into specific topics. And another thing I like is that it is so easy that almost everyone can do it. You do not need any special knowledge about ICT.

It can be a useful tool for teachers and their classes as wiki can be used as a project work of students. Only thing that can limited you is time and lack of ideas or imagination. 🙂

An article about usage of Skype in English lessons really attracted my attention. Not only I was informed about the programme itself quite nicely, I even found out that it was “invented” in Europe, in Sweden, and I was surprised that there is one of headquarters of the company in Prague. Nevertheless, those information are not important for English lessons. 

It is great that there is a possibility to make a common English course more interesting for pupils by connecting the Internet and dowloading a free programme that is not so difficult to install and use (even for me).

The thing I like the most about Skype in EFL classroom is that children can communicate with people from foreign countries easily. Not only they can practise their speaking and other skills, they can do it even by means of information technologies that are a basic need of nowadays teenagers, I think, and the majority of young people is familiar with basics of ICT at least. While speaking in foreign language they learn the language in non-violent way and I think they communicative skills as well. It would be much easier to speak with citizens e.g. on holiday abroad. In my opinion, this type of communication is more useful than writing only (e. g. chat with a friend from other country).

I think that from teacher´s point of view Skype can be a diversification of common lessons, a new approach to teaching language and possibility to show how creative he or she is. Moreover, usage of Skype in lessons can also provide a ground for cooperation between schools and students from different countries and it can help the school to become a part of some interesting project.

It´s a pity there is not enough time and space to use Skype or other tool like that very often but I hope I would have an opportunity and luck to try it in my future career of teacher.

I have read an interesting article about how to start a blog. As I have never done anything like this before, I found very useful to follow some basic steps or advices which I would like to share with you.

There are 5 advices for begginers by Melanie Nelson:

1. No Audio-loading Music

There is nothing more annoying than when you enter a web page and a loud sound smash you down! You are surprised, shocked, even terryfied, and you look for the escape button. And what more-this tool really slow down the loading of the blog.

2. Suitable Design and Colours

As reading online is harder, it is better to use rather fair backgroud and dark text. Not only because of usefulness and readability. Your eyes would appreciate it as well.

3. Sidebar Clutter

To avoid chaotic orientation on your blog, it is useful to put less important posts and links into one special link. Your blog then looks more tidy and it is easier to follow.

4. Accidental Plagiarism

Be aware of that you can´t post anything you want to your blog. Even when you put a photo or picture on your blog you should reference from where or whom you have it. You can´t simply copy a picture from the Internet, save it in you PC and then post it. You can be accused of plagiarism.

5. “Click here” 

If you want to put a link on your blog, it is much better to insert a link as a part of the sentence (some particular word). Try to avoid using “click here” or “here” expressions- they are everywhere on the web and not using it would make your blog more “you”.

I hope I will be able to follow these advices, at least I will try.

Never before my ICT course at the university I was intersted in things like creating a wiki or blog. But as I am supposed to create a blog to get the credit, I will try to read and write some things that are related to ICT, teaching English etc. I hope it will be a good experience for me.
